i went to brenton's prom on friday, and to the after-prom party to. i had fun, though i wish i'd known at least someone else well enough to be able to talk with. i think he wouldve had a lot more fun, especially at the party, if that had been the case.
saturday i crashed becket. it was really really good. erin ross and rachel wrote a super cool worship, and i got talk with yelena and meet a kid named mike, and that was really cool. i was also part of a real life horror movie, starring brenton as the cocky/rebellious kid, mike as the nice guy who takes care of the girls, yelena and i as the scared girls who never break any rules and are terrified of being busted, and holly as the cool chick who wants to look around more. our heroes were exploring the woods late at night, when they came upon a large seemingly abandoned building. the curious nature of some (ahem brenton) led them up the back stairs to the second floor. though some would've liked to split up, they followed the first rule of horror movies that no one ever follows-never split up. our group made their way around to the front of the building, onto a balcony, beneath which was a car none of them had remembered seeing on their walk to the building... it goes on in similar vein.
so weekend was good, ultimate starts up tonight, and that's about it.

why has everything turned out this way?
the patterns of my life had seemed destined to repeat, but i think they're changing at least. i talked to jess last night... it's somewhat amusing to be getting ready to go home to sleep at 1am when your friend is scrounging for lunch halfway across the world... and i've talked to kate and fishie too. so at least i haven't totally lost wellesley connections yet. maybe i am capable of normal social interaction after all. it's too bad i've lost so much already. i don't know how to fix it.

in other news, i got (another) job, and i've survived the horror that is the DMV, and after 2 days of visiting and waiting i now have CT plates for my car. summer league starts on wed (i hope) but before that it's cape cod until sunday or so. and speaking of sunday-pool party fun this weekend... sunday or monday, or even both. hmmm i guess i'd have to make sure i actually come back on sunday then. but anyways, if anyone wants to come let me know. open invitation.

interestingly enough, the ankle was totally fine. it was my elbow whichstopped me for playing for most the day. it seems that laying out with a defender oncoming, and trying to catch the disc and hitting said defender before making contact with the ground can have the interesting effect of jamming and/or hyperextending ones elbow, in such away that full range of motion has not yet returned now 9 or 10 hours later.
i'll be playing tomorrow. luckily it wasnt my thowing arm.

So the majority of my displeasure, for the second day running, is focused on Umass, who, in their infinite wisdom, decided to cancel Umassacre this weekend due to inclement weather. (For those of you who haven't looked out your window-this would be the monsoon type inclement weather that has yet to make an appearance this weekend) So negative points to Umass, who not only canceled their tourney but also pushed back the start of my personal ultimate season another 2 weeks, so i now get to go into sectionals without having played a game since november.

after some way serious campus uproar and "community" (and by community i refer to the name of wellesley's online central forum) debates devolving onto various tangents, andrew t bouchard felt a need to clarify his previous statements.

First of all, I would like to note that it only took one post to illicit that enormous reation from so many on the campus. I mean no offense here, but I think that it might be important for those who responded in anger to reflect on that. It would seem to indicate to me some degree of insecurity in yourself with the situation. I am not judging any person here, but the homosexual lifestyle and especially the push for marriage does violate a natural order that existed since time began. It also speaks volumes that nearly all of the responses that I got were not arguments, but simply threats or empty statement with no logic or evidence to support them. The only people who were able to rebut an Olin freshman intelligently on this topic were a teacher and a professional gay activist (by the way, thank you to them for an engaging discussion).
That being said, I think that there are a few questions that were either spoken or unspoken that I need to answer. I am an Olin freshman cross-registered at Wellesley. As many have probably guessed, I am a Christian, but probably not the kind of Christian some are expecting. Also, I will probably not go away as I have my sights set on a minor that I cannot earn at Babson or Olin. But contrary to popular belief, I am not the kind of person who would hold up one of those dispicable "God Hates Gays" signs; in fact, I loathe the people who do. The truth, I believe, is that God loves homosexuals just as much as He loves everyone else, and as such, I think that they deserve my respect and friendship just as much as any other person. However, politics and the way that this country is run should not be dictated by religion, as I would hope you could see through the article that I posted. I am truly sorry that some of you were offended by it -- that was certainlyl not my intention. But I do stand by my arguments, even the concessions that I gave. Someone was nice enough to point out that I did mention creating policies where they do not exist that give some of the economic and legal benefits of marriage to homosexual couples. Please appreciate that this is a concession on my part, which would not exist in my idea of a perfect society.
Again, I did not mean to offend anyone with my article, and it was not born out of hate, but rather out of concern for this country. I understand that there are anecdotes to refute some of the evidence that I presented, but that does not undermine the validity of my statistics. I sincerely hope that you will not let political differences stand in the way of appreciating people for who they are.
-Andrew T. Bouchard

please excuse me while i ponder this hypocrisy.
please also note the incorrect spelling of despicable.
at least use the spell check.

Traditional Marriage: A Threatened Institution
By Andrew Bouchard, Op-Ed Editor
After the recent Supreme Court decision in the Lawrence v. Texas anti-sodomy case, the issue of homosexual marriage has again been thrust into the political limelight. As a result of this increasing activism in the court, major changes have already been seen, with the city of Cambridge recently legalizing homosexual marriage. Many now fear that the entire state of Massachusetts will follow suit. In response, there has been an increasingly strong push for a constitutional amendment defining marriage in the United States as a union between a man and woman only. Given all of these recent developments, most of the population is left asking themselves if homosexual marriage should indeed be legalized. Fortunately, because of studies that have already been done around the world, and especially here in the US, we find a clear answer: a resounding “no.” the legalization of homosexual marriage will undermine the institution as a whole and there are other options for giving benefits to homosexual couples. Fundamentally, this issue is not the government’s to decide.
The first problem is that homosexual marriage would interfere with the institution as a whole, to the detriment of homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. A study by Dr. Maria Xiridou of the Amsterdam Municipal Health Service showed that the average homosexual marriage lasts only one and one-half years, and that homosexuals in a relationship have an average of eight partners per year outside of those relationships. This is certainly not what one would call a stable relationship and the recognition of this arrangement as a “marriage” would undoubtedly weaken the institution as a whole. Also, the legalization of homosexual marriage would open doors that should remain closed. Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in the dissenting opinion to Lawrence v. Texas that “Texas Penal Code Ann. Section 21.06(a) (2003) (the statute banning sodomy) undoubtedly imposes constraints on liberty. So do laws prohibiting prostitution, recreational use of heroin, and, for that matter, working more than 60 hours per week in a bakery. But there is no right to “liberty” under the Due Process Clause, though today’s opinion repeatedly makes that claim.” Using this same argument, we can see that legalizing homosexual marriage would likely, in the name of fairness and “liberty,” lead to the legalization of such perversions as polygamy and adult incest. Finally, homosexual marriage is not a stable means of raising children, which is the entire basis for marriage. The first indication of this fact is the aforementioned instability of homosexual marriage, which is even greater than that of the modern heterosexual marriage. However, Leslie Koepke remarked in an April 1992 report that, “Even individuals who believe that same-sex relationships are a legitimate choice for adults may feel that children will suffer from being reared in such families,” after looking at statistics showing that children of homosexual couples are more likely to have social and psychological problems than other children. For these reasons, the legalization of gay marriage would undermine the very institution of marriage, and thus should not be allowed.
The second important issue surrounding homosexual marriage is the fundamental question of who should grant marriage and why. It will likely surprise many to find that the government does not grant this as a right, but that society itself grants marriage and the government simply recognizes what society allows. In recognition of this, New Jersey Superior Court Judge Linda Feinberg dismissed New Jersey’s latest judicial attempt at the legalization of homosexual marriage, stating that, “It is for the legislature, not the courts, to define or redefine the definition of marriage.” This is because it is the legislature and not the courts which directly represent the people and society. Considering that fifty-five percent of Americans oppose gay marriage according to a recent ABC News poll, this should be reflected in the actions of the nation’s lawmakers. Of course, if we are to decide as a population whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to marry, we must know what constitutes a marriage. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a marriage is, “The institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family,” or “The basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their own or adopted children.” Given the negative repercussions of allowing homosexual couples to raise children, presented above, it is difficult to justify the creation of homosexual marriage for the purpose of creating a family. Numerous studies, in addition, show how the traditional heterosexual marriage contributes to the well-being of the members of the family and to society, including a study published Kelly Kelleher in the June, 2000, issue of Pediatrics that showed that children in married-parent homes were healthier both emotionally and physically. These benefits are why society chooses to recognize heterosexual marriage, and why it will continue to reject any perversion of this sacred institution.
Since society cannot logically grant marriage to homosexual couples in order to build a family, the only other argument for homosexual marriage is that of the economic benefits of marriage. However, there are several other ways to give these benefits without compromising the sanctity of marriage. The first, and most obvious way, is through the use of civil unions. These partnerships already exist in the law, and give the benefits sought by most homosexual couples. By using these legal relationships, homosexuals gain the economic advantages of a marriage without undermining the institution by the nature of their relationship. Another, less used option is that of creating a limited liability company, which has the tax and other economic benefits of a marriage, again without disturbing the fundamental unit of our society: the family. It is also important to note that some of the power in this decision also rests with the individual employers, who can choose to give benefits to homosexual partners. Entrepreneur magazine reported in November 1997 that Disney now offers the same benefits to homosexual partners of its employees as it does to spouses of married employees. These three other options mean that homosexuals have plenty of avenues open to gain the economic benefits of a marriage without having to redefine marriage for the entire nation.
When it comes to the issue of homosexual marriage, it is essential that we realize that this is an issue that could have far-reaching consequences, and thus must be handled very carefully. Because its legalization would result in problems for the institution of marriage as a whole, this is obviously not a solution to the controversy. Also, the solid opposition within society prevents homosexual marriage from being a feasible reality. Given these reasons, the last weapon of the homosexual agenda is that of “fairness”: economic benefits of a marriage should be available to homosexual couples in the name of equality. However, it is evident that there are several other ways to achieve this goal without infringing upon the family, the basic unit of our culture and the cornerstone of a stable society. In the end, this debate not only affects the homosexuals who seek to marry, but everyone who exists within this social framework, and it is for this reason and for the sake of these people that homosexual marriage cannot be legalized in the United States.

so i ment to write this when it actually happened, but yeah. stuff happens.

i took the bus back to south station, and then had to take the T to harvard square to catch a bus to wellesley. across from me on the T was a woman and her partner. they were so nice to watch interacting... really sweet and dare i say heartwarming. neither was attractive or eye catching in any way but some people just have this spark that you cant take your eyes from. and i think that women sees things the same way... she had a notebook and she was writing. looking around at the people on the T and writing. she glanced at me once or twice but i never could tell if i caught her eye at all. i wonder if she wrote anything about me, what she saw in me. or didnt see. i wonder if i am one of those compelling people, someone with a spark.

in other news: steph, i have once upon an island info. we need to make a plan-fast.

my room smells like onions.
i want to spend 5 or 6 hours cooking all the food in my room. i want to go shopping for more groceries so i can do more cooking. someone come visit me so i have a reason to make more food.

im beginning to appreciate spanish more. a 7-8 hour commitment per day (class time and homework) is a little excessive, but i find all the cultural stuff fascinating. like Borges. wow. and id like to become fluent. i realize this might be difficult seeing as how i have no plans to take any more spanish classes, but still. fluency would be wonderful.

back at wellesley. i've missed it more than i thought.
though off to a pretty stellar start in the few hours pre/post the start of 2004, my new years resolution was pretty much a bust by the end of day 2. not that i was trying very hard by then though. it seems it simply wasn't in the cards. maybe i never fit, and just fooled myself into thinking i did for a few years. but however it was it's clear enough now that i'm somewhere else, and probably couldn't fold myself up to fit back even if i wanted to. and i'm not going to fold.
thank you for fixing my bracelet. you know i miss you already.

exam quiet hours: 10pm to 9pm. normal noise level is now allowed only between 9 and 10 at night. who does this? honestly... i find this more stressful than any of my exams and papers i'll have to be completing in the next week. and points for not telling any of the first years before they put the signs up announcing it.
